What is exactly is a chronograph? What makes a ceramic watch so special? Here is a dictionary of basic watch-related words and phrases used throughout www.onemomentwatches.com
Bezel
A bezel on a watch is the ring that surrounds the dial, or face, of the watch. The bezel typically holds the crystal (the transparent watch face cover) in place. It can be either decorative (as in the Rock Candy Collection) or functional (as in the Sport Chrono Collection). See also Diving Bezel, below.
Bracelet, watch bracelet.

Ceramic
Ceramic is a relatively new material used in the production of watches, thus it is considered by many in the industry to be "high-tech" and "cutting edge." The ceramic composite material, which can be used to form the watch case, bezel, dial, and strap, is valued for its durability it is virtually guaranteed not to break or scratch. Some other benefits of ceramic: it is a lightweight material and is hypoallergenic. See TOYWATCH's Ceramic Watch Collection.
Chronograph
A chronograph is a timepiece that can measure time in different ways, and has both timekeeping and stopwatch functions. There are many different variations on chronographs, but typically chronographs come in three types: analog, digital, and analog-digital. TOYWATCH Thailand chronos are classic analog chronographs, showing both the time and stopwatch with analog "hands." The center second hand is used as the stopwatch and does not interfere with the continuous timekeeping function of the watch. In addition to the stopwatch, a chronograph features different subdials which can record different measures of time (ie, seconds, minutes, and hours).
The chronograph was invented in 1821 by a Frenchman named Rieussec, but it didn't really enjoy much popularity until it was developed as a wristwatch in the early 1900s. With the invention of waterproof watches in the 1930s, the chrono really took off, becoming particularly loved by sportsmen, military men, and (later) deep-sea divers, whose pursuits required them to record the time of certain events accurately and easily. This history has contributed to the "sporty" image today's chronograph wristwatch enjoys, as it was classically used by people who had exciting, adventurous lives and jobs. Many watch collectors (like TOYWATCH Thailand consider the chronograph to be the ultimate movement in timekeeping, as it is quite complex and beautiful to look at (on the inside of the movement), and it requires a high level of craft and skill to execute properly.
Crown
The crown is the button on the outside of the watch case used to set the time and/or date. Also called a stem or a pin. Mechanical watches have what is called a "winding stem" for a crown because the crown is also used to wind the spring in the watch. A screw-down (or screw-in) crown screws into the watch case, tightening the seal around the watch and thus increasing the water resistance of the watch. All TOYWATCH watches have screw-down crowns.
Dial
The watch face when buying watches in Bangkok.
Diving Bezel
A diving bezel is a watch bezel that rotates counterclockwise and contains the same minute markings as the watch dial itself. This allows the user to track how much time has lapsed; the rotation allows the time-tracking to begin at any point in the hour.
The rotating bezel is called a diving bezel because it was originally designed so that deep-sea divers could accurately track the length of their dives and surface in a safe and timely manner (to avoid decompression illness). Another common watch feature that has its roots in deep-sea diving is florescent hands and number markers at the depths very little daylight penetrates the water, so glow-in-the-dark features on the hands, dial, and bezel were necessary.
Movement
A watch movement is the mechanism on the inside of a watch that keeps the time, date, etc. Movements are either mechanical or quartz. Mechanical movements require a high degree of craftsmanship and thus tend to be expensive. Quartz movements are known for their accuracy and reasonable cost. All TOYWATCH watches feature quartz movements.
Pave
Pave is French word for a setting of precious or semi-precious stones placed so close together that no metal shows. From the English word pave, which means to cover uniformly.
Rose Gold
Rose Gold is a combination of gold and copper, typically used in custom jewelry. Also known as Pink Gold or Red Gold, Rose Gold has a pink-to-red hue, which comes from the addition of the copper to the gold. The color difference is due to the amount of copper used in the alloy the more copper used, the redder the color. On an historical note, Rose Gold used to be called Russian Gold owing to the popular use of the alloy in early 19th century Russia.
Subdial Watches in Thailand
A small dial on the watch face, subdials can be used to track time or to keep the date. Several TOYWATCH chronograph styles feature subdials.
Strap, Watch Strap
Another word for watch band, typically used when the band is made of a cloth, synthetic, or leather material.
Water Resistance
If a watch is water resistant it can withstand limited amounts of exposure to water, as with splashes or brief sprays. Not the same as a waterproof watch, which indicates the ability to withstand being submerged in water for long periods of time and down to certain depths. Bathing or swimming with a water resistant watch is not recommended. All TOYWATCH watches are water resistant.
