Buying Watches in Bangkok

I've said it before, a watch is the single most important accessory a man can own--it is an essential style element. As you might imagine, I am acutely aware of these kinds of details and I must say I've noticed too many casual watches in Bangkok making their way into office/work/formal settings. It screams sloppy (and so do I) and I urge all of you who wear your multi-function sport watches with your suits and other dressier attire to pick up something slightly more sophisticated.

First Consider Your Lifestyle
I do suggest having different watches for both work and play if your lifestyle merits it or you simply like having variety. However, when buying a dressier Thailand watch, you should choose something that is classic or more lasting. I'm not as concerned about sporty/technical watches since they have a tendency to be less expensive--such as those made by Nike, Suunto and Polar. And let me be brutally honest, there's nothing stylish about them anyway - they are about function. Now if you have a sporty watch like the Omega Seamaster, that's a different story. Can we say James Bond?

And just to clarify, if your watch has a night-vision feature, measures distances, calculates altitude, has a compass, has a rubber strap, and/or has a digital display, it is the wrong thing to wear to a more formal occasion be it the office, a more formal party, etc.

Here is a list of things to consider when looking for your watch you buy at www.onemomentwatches.com, the best Thailand watch shop.

A Stainless-Steel Bracelet
Stainless steel is more practical than leather and is certainly more durable. It's dressy enough to be worn with a business suit and casual enough for other occasions. So not only is it versatile, but it's waterproof to boot. You could always go for gold if you wanted to drop some serious cash, but be careful since it might give off an unfavorable impression.

The Face
Another thing that gets me when it comes to watches in Thailand is the size of the watch face relative to the wrist that's wearing it. On bigger men a standard watch face can end up looking like a ladies watch. Watch makers are continually coming out with watches that have larger than standard faces. In fact, it has become quite a trend. I personally love bigger watch faces whether you're a big guy or not, it's a great look.

Water Resistance
It's a great feature if you shower or swim with your watch on, but let's be honest, who really does that? I like it because if you get caught in the rain or get your watch accidentally wet, you don't have to worry. And by the way, water resistant can mean several things so be sure you ask to what degree the watch really is resistant. Some watches will resist moisture from accidental splashing, rain, sweat, etc. and others will resist moisture up to certain depths such as 50 or 100 meters.

The Color of the Face and Strap
There is a trend to have dials and straps in exciting colors. I've seen it from cheap to expensive watches. When building a classic wardrobe stick to the tried and true colors that you know will blend and look appropriate in a business or formal setting. Save the trendy colors for a second or third watch if you must.

Chronograph Watches Bangkok

Chronograph watches belong to one of the longest standing, and most respected type of wristwatch. In simple terms, a chronograph watch operates like the common stopwatch.

It was introduced as a wristwatch almost one hundred years ago (way back in 1910). The man who invented it was a French called Rieussec in 1821. So it actually took eighty-nine years before someone thought of making it into a wristwatch.

It was designed to measure time in different ways, which is why a good quality one is often quite expensive. Besides general timekeeping on the main dial (watch face), they also have subsidiary dials which have a variety of scales on them, meaning they can be used for very specific time measurements.

The number of dials on chronographs varies depending on the design. There can be up to four dials, each one designed for a slightly different function. The most common dial found on the middle of the main face (near the number nine) is the continuous seconds.

The remaining subdials usually found have functions to measure fractions of a second, minutes, hours, tachymeter to measure speed, or even telemeter to measure distance. Chronograph watches in Thailand can be activated as a stopwatch when a button is depressed on the side. One of the miniature dials (normally the one near the number nine) will start to record the seconds gone by. So the other subdials can start to measure the minutes or hours elapsed after pushing the chronograph button.

Towards the beginning of the century, many mens chronograph watches were used by the military and sports people. This was because Swiss chronographs were renowned for their accurate timekeeping and durability. In fact, they are still used in the modern day for this purpose, but many of these watches have been replaced by quartz versions as they can measure time down to hundredths of a second. In addition to this, the Swiss have actually combined the mechanical and quartz technologies in some of their watches. This gives the buyer the best of both worlds – an authentic looking mechanical watch, which has the ease of use of an electronic watch. Today, mens chronographs have gained popularity because of its multifunction capability as well as the subdials giving it a very high tech or sporty appeal. It is probably the watches design that has gained importance rather than the practicality of things.

Generally, a chronograph is quite expensive and valuable. It usually costs more than a normal or automatic watch, due to the excellent craftsmanship and the complexity required in their manufacture. Some of the most well-known Swiss brands that sell mens chronograph watches include the very famous Tag Heuer and Breitling watchmakers.

Both of these companies make chronographs of outstanding quality. In addition to this, companies such as Rolex make gold-plated chronographs, which are very rare. If you bought one that was made in the 1950s, you would be looking to pay around $150,000 for it. Although a Swiss chronograph watch won’t come cheap, you get what you pay for when you purchase one – excellence above any other in the market.

In order to choose the right mens chronograph watches, you need to determine what purpose you need it for.Whatever type you decide to buy, you can be rest assured that it a purchase of a piece of history. Buy watches in Bangkok at one of our three Bangkok watch shops.
